KIMMEL'S (JIG) [1]. AKA and see "Micho Russell's Jig (2)," "Micky Callaghan's Jig," "Mickey O'Callaghan," "Patsy Geary's (1)," "Yellow Rose (The)." Irish, Jig or Slide. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'B. A Brooklyn resident of German ancestry, accordionist John J. "Dutch" Kimmel recorded mostly Irish tunes for Edison in the early 20th century. The 'Kimmel' title is a miss-naming. Philippe Varlet says the connection between Kimmel and the tune "is tenuous at best," and stems from a track recorded by Declan Masterson and Kevin Glackin on "Face the Hob," one the "Music for Sets" recordings that was David Taylor's source for his transcription (employed as accompaniment music for the 5th figure of the Orange and Green Set). The set, consisting of this jig paired with "Coleman's Cross (4)," was recorded by the Bothy Band in 1975. It was the second tune (i.e. "Coleman's Cross") that was recorded in 1916 by Kimmel (see "Kimmel's Jig (2)"), clarifies Varlet, and the accordionist never actually recorded the present jig, called by Taylor "Kimmel's [1]." His name became associated with the Geary/Yellow Rose tune through its pairing with the "Coleman's Cross" tune which he did record (as "Smash"). As a slide (12/8 time) it has been recorded as "Micky Callaghan's Jig" and "Micho Russel's Slide."
