KIRKGATE HORNPIPE [1]. AKA and see "Cook Hornpipe," "Manchester Hornpipe (8)." English, Hornpipe. England, Yorkshire. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Kidson (1890) notes this hornpipe (along with "Kirkgate Hornpipe (2)") was at one time greatly popular in Leeds, Yorkshire. In the mid-19th century a small musical society in the region used to hold its meetings in Kirkgate, and the hornpipes were great favorites there. Kidson had the melody is from a manuscript dated 1818. Fiddler Lawrence Leadley (Helperby, Yorkshire) included the tune in his c. 1840's music manuscript under the title "Cook Hornpipe."
