LADY JARDINE OF APPLEGIRTH'S STRATHSPEY. Scottish, Strathspey. B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Composed by Borders fiddler-composer biography:John Pringle (c. 1770-c. 1807). Lady Jardine was born Jane Dorcas Maule (1776-1825), daughter of Thomas Maule (the heir male and representative of the earls of Panmure). She married Alexander Jardine, 6th Baronet of Applegirth (Dumfries), in 1799, who was a member of a prominent Borders family. Their residence, Jardine Hall, was a stately home located on an estate of over 5,000 acres of land along the banks of the River Annan. The couple had four children, one of whom was the noted naturalist and orinthologist Sir William Jardine. Lady Jane died in 1825 in Madeira, Portugal. See also James Porteous's tunes for her, "Lady Jardine's Reel" and "Lady Jardine's Strathspey." It was to Lady Jardine that Porteous dedicated his only collection, A Collection of Strathspeys, Reels & Jigs, Respectfully Dedicated to Lady Jardine of Applegarth; Arranged for the Piano Forte, Violin & violoncello by James Porteous (Edinburgh, 1821).
