There were several 'Lady Menzies of Castle Menzies' in Marshall's lifetime, the spouses of the 3rd through 6th Baronets of Castle Menzies. One Lady Menzies was Charlotte, daughter of the Duke of Athole who was aged twelve when poet Robert Burns stopped to visit at Blair Athole in 1787. She was part of the "Angel Band", the Duke and Duchess's young children (Edward and Robert, Charlotte, Amelia {7}, and Elizabeth {5 mos.}), that so captivated Burns. She became the wife of Sir John Menzies, 4th Baronet, albeit briefly, as he died after they had been wed only three years (for more see "Annotation:Lady Charlotte Murray (1)"). Sir Neil Menzies, 6th Baronet (1780–1844) who came to the title in 1813, married twice; first to Emilia Frances Balfour (who died in 1810) and secondly to Grace Charlotte Conyers Norton who outlived him by three decades (d. 1877). Grace married Sir Neil in 1816 and is the "Lady Menzies" of Marshall's last two decades.
Castle Menzies is in Aberfeldy on the northern side of Strathtay, near where Marshall lived, and was commenced in 1571 by Sir John Menzies, completed in 1578. It has been restored and maintained by Clan Menzies.
