LAMENT FOR LORD BALLENDEN, A. Scottish, Slow Air (3/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). Although Borders fiddler-composer biography:John Pringle composed a number of tunes in his 1801 collection and identified them as his compositions; this is one of several tunes in his collection that had no composer attribution.

The title Lord Bellenden (note spelling) was a Peerage of Scotland, and the family owned the Broughton area of Edinburgh. There were two Lord Bellenden's that Pringle's tune may have referred to: John Ker Bellenden of Broughton , 5th Lord Bellenden (1751–1796) or Robert Bellenden, 6th Lord Bellenden (1734–1797)--the tenure of the latter lasting only a year. See also Gow's "Lord Ballenden."
