LAND OF LINCOLN. AKA and see "Old John Tate." American, Reel. A Minor ('A', 'B' and 'D' parts) & D Major ('C' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AA'CCDDCCDDAA'. "Land of Lincoln" is the motto on the Illinois state vehicular license plate. The tune was a composition of Bluegrass mandolinist Bill Monroe, performed at the Bean Blossom festival in 1969, and recorded by him on November 25, 1969 (with the then-Bluegrass Boys consisting of James Monroe, Rual Yarbrough, Bill Yates and fiddler Kenny Baker). "Boffman's Reel", from Bob Fast, a nephew of Nebraska fiddler Bob Walters, is a similar tune in parts. Gene Silberberg notes that parts 'A' and 'D' are sometimes played together in the Northwest U.S., with the title of "Old John Tate."
