LAST NEW VAGARIES, THE. AKA - "Last New Figaries, The." English, Country Dance Tune and Jig (6/4 or 6/8 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune with directions for a country dance was first published in London by Henry Playford in his Dancing Master, 11th edition (1701, p. 311) as "The New Figaries." The dance and tune were retained in the long-running Dancing Master series of editions through the 18th and final edition of 1728. The title was corrected to "The New Vagaries" with the 14th edition (1709), when the Dancing Master publication was taken over by John Young, heir to the Playford printing concerns. "Last" in the tune title differentiates it from a previous Playford title "New Figary (The)."
'Vagary' and 'Figary' are synonyms, in this context meaning a caprice, whim or frolic.
