Annotation:Lazy Kate (1)
LAZY KATE [1]. American, Reel (2/4 time). USA; Alabama, Arkansas, Missouri, Nebraska. A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was described in Adams' book as a typical Ozark Mountain tune of about 1840. It appears in a list of traditional Ozark Mountain fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. "Lazy Kate" is one of '100 essential Missouri tunes' listed by Missouri fiddler Charlie Walden. A tune by this title was mentioned by the Northwest Alabamian of September 4, 1930, as one of the examples of "acceptable old-time numbers" for an upcoming fiddlers' convention in Fayette (Cauthen, 1990).
Other than the obvious meaning, the title may possibly refer to the implement called a 'lazy kate' used in knitting, a rack that holds two bobbins so that one can ply two or more yarns together.
