LOGIER'S HORNPIPE. AKA and see "Miss Lacy's," "Old Man Quinn," "Sailor's Hornpipe (8)," "Savin Hill." Irish, English; Hornpipe. D Major (Blackman): G Major (O'Neill). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. A version of the hornpipe appears as an untitled tune in the 1883 music manuscript collection of Leitrim musician Stephen Grier. Grier was originally from Abbeylara, Granard, Co. Longford, but moved to Bohey in Gortletteragh, Leitrim, where he compiled a massive 1,000 tune manuscript (only a portion of which has survived). See also the closely related two-part "Old Man Quinn," from O'Neill's earlier collections, collected from Chicago Police Sergeant James Early, an uilleann piper. Early had the tune from his fellow piper and elderly relative from Cloone, James Quinn (b. 1805), and the tune was thus named for Early's source.
It is possible the hornpipe was composed by light music composer Johann Bernhard Logier (1777-1846) who was born in Kassel, at the time part of the Electorate of Hesse (Germany). At the age of 14 he moved to England and soon began playing in military bands, although moved to Dublin around 1805 where he spent the rest of his life.
