LONG JOHN. American, Reel (2/4 or cut time). USA; Arkansas, Kentucky, Nebraska. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The title appears in a list of traditional Ozarks Mountains fiddle tunes compiled by musicologist/folklorist Vance Randolph, published in 1954. "Long John" is one of '100 essential Missouri tunes' listed by Missouri fiddler Charlie Walden. "Waynesburgh/Waynesboro" is a related tune. "Long John" was in the repertoire of Monticello, Ky., musician W.L. Gregory, who apparently learned it from fiddler Leonard Rutherford (who himself recorded the tune in October, 1929, for Gennett Records, although the side was unissued).
