LORD BROUGHAM'S HORNPIPE. English, Hornpipe (cut time). England, North West. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Lord Brougham's Hornpipe" has been identified as entered in the hand of Thomas Browne, an early 19th century member of the prosperous farming family from Troutbeck, Lake District, Cumbria. The tune is named for Wikipedia:Henry_Peter_Brougham,_1st_Baron_Brougham_and_Vaux (1778-1868), a British statesman who became Lord High Chancellor. He played a prominent role in passing the 1832 (Legal) Reform Act and the 1833 Slavery Abolition Act. He was also known forhis six-hour speech on legal reform in 1828, the longest ever made in the House of Commons, as the designer of the brougham, a four-wheeled, horse-drawn style carriage that bears his name.
