LORD BYRON'S FAVORITE. AKA and see "Darling (1) (The)." Scottish, Strathspey. E Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Ryan's "Lord Byron's Favorite" was published in 1816 in Capt. Simon Fraser's Highland collection under the title "Darling (1) (The)." William Bradbury Ryan's publisher, Elias Howe, printed the tune (set as a reel) in his Musician's Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7 at about the same time the Mammoth Collection was issued, but Howe used Fraser's "Darling" title in his publication. In an age before databases and effective cross-referencing (and given the volume of tunes both Ryan and Howe worked with), it is not surprising that tune titles were sometimes reinvented.
