LOWLANDS OF SCOTLAND, THE. AKA and see "Hare's Paw (1)." Scottish, Irish; Reel. E Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Kennedy): AA'BB' (Kerr). The reel is traditionally paired with the strathspey "Highlands of Scotland (1) (The)." The reel appears (as "Lowlands of Scotland") in the large mid-19th century music manuscript collection of County Cork cleric and uilleann piper Canon James Goodman, although Goodman's setting is distanced from that printed in the Kerr's collection. Both are identified by researcher Conor Ward as belonging to the "Hare's Paw (1)" tune family. County Leitrim musician Stephen Grier's "Lowlands of Scotland" tune is a version of "Marquis of Huntly's Strathspey (1) (The)," Conor points out.
