MACFARLANE'S REEL. AKA – "Rud am Fitheah Orinn (An)," "MacFarlane's Rant." Scottish, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB (Surenne): AABB (Stewart-Robertson): AABBCDE (McGlashan). The melody appears in the 1734 Drummond Castle Manuscript Part 2 (in the possession of the Earl of Ancaster at Drummond Castle), inscribed "A Collection of the best Highland Reels written by David Young, W.M. & Accomptant." Edinburgh fiddler and writing Master David Young also included the reel in his MacFarlane Manuscript (c. 1741; p. 228), written for the use of Walter Mcfarlan of MacFarlane.
The reel was popularized in modern times by piper Donald MacLeod in his 20th century piping book.
