MAGURIE'S KICK. AKA and see "Eddie Moloney's Jig (2)," "Maguire's Kick," "Whelan's Old Sow," "Whelan's Sow." Irish; Jig, Slide or March (6/8 or 12/8 time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). Collector George Petrie (1905), whom Paul de Grae believes is O'Neill's source for the tune, describes it as a "rebel's march in 1798." De Grae also finds "Limerick Lass Jig (The)" in Ryan's Mammoth Collection (1883) to be similar to O'Neill's setting (although not as close as the Petrie setting) and he cites collector P.W. Joyce's "Humors of Glenflesk (The)" and "Punch for Ladies" as having similar first strains but different second parts[1]. See also the cognate "Old Woman Lamenting Her Purse (The)."
