MALLAIS' JIG. Canadian, Jig (6/8 time). Canada, New Brunswick. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABBCC. This untitled jig was identified as a "Don Messer Tune" on field recorder Art Rosenbaum's 1966 recording of New Brunswick fiddler Fidel Martin, then living in Berlin, N.H. The association with Messer seems tentative. Peter Corfield (2024) assigns the name "Mallais' Jig" to the tune, as Martin was recorded on the tape saying that it was the first tune he learned as a boy, from Mr. Mallais of Chatham, N.B., around the year 1900. The tune then predates radio and TV fiddler Don Messer (who was born in 1909), although it is possible Messer recorded it at some point.
