MANCHESTER HORNPIPE [7]. English, Hornpipe (cut time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune is No. 98 in Gibbon's ms. Gibbon's untitled "Hornpipe No. 101" is the melody most traditional musicians recognize as the "Manchester Hornpipe (1)," and is a different tune than his No. 98 given here. It was originally set in the key of 'C' major in Gibbon's ms. However, Gibbons also has the same "Manchester Hornpipe [4]" melody elsewhere in his ms. under titles "Liverpool Hornpipe (1)" and "London Hornpipe (5)," covering the major cities of England! The same tune was entered as an untitled hornpipe (No. 85) in the music manuscript collection of musician William Clarke, Feltwell, Norfolk, East Anglia, who was active c. 1820-1850.
