The title honors Mary Turner Gavin, daughter of David Gavin, of Langton House, Berwickshire, who in 1793 married Lieutenant-General John Campbell (1762–1834), 1st Marquess of Breadalbane. Mary was styled the first Marchioness of Breadalbane on 12 September, 1831. The couple had one son and two daughters: one daughter, Lady Mary Campbell, married Richard Temple-Grenville, 2nd Duke of Buckingham and Chandos, while the son, John, Earl of Ormelie, succeeded his father. The Marchioness died in September 1845, the year that Marshall's posthumous final collection was published.
