MASTER CROWLEY'S FAVORITE. AKA and see "Cosán go dtí an Tobar," "Killavil Jig (2)," "Limerick Roses," "Pathway to the Well." Irish, Jig. The title "Master Crowley's Favorite" is the title employed by Donegal fiddler Hugh Gillespie when he recorded the tune in New York on 78 RPM disc (1st jig in set "Master Crowley's Favorites"). Gillespie was mentored by Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman, and was very influenced by his style and repertoire. Coleman himself recorded the jig in 1940 as "Cherish the Ladies", a two-part jig that is a distanced version of the multiple-part tune that usually goes by that title (c.f. the 1st and 3rd parts). Philippe Varlet also finds a version by County Sligo fiddler Michael Coleman, recorded on a hard-to-find World Broadcast record made in 1944, appearing as the second tune in a medley entitled "James O'Beirne's" (a reference to fellow-New York fiddler James "Lad" O'Beirne). A few years later Sligo fiddler Paddy Killoran recorded the melody under the title "Limerick Roses." Leitrim fiddler Seamus Horan played the tune with Packie Duignan on their Topic LP, but not having a name simply called it "Your Jig." Given all the above, Varlet concludes the connection of the tune with Sligo region fiddlers is strong. "Pathway to the Well" is currently the title in vogue for the jig, and comes from a tune book compiled by County Mayo/NYC fiddler John McGrath.
