He was invited back (I think toDance week in Fall) the next year. He was too sick to come and sentyounger men in his place; he lived long enough for them to come backhome, and give their report, and to make his 91st birthday. And hedied. He was said to be active, playing and recording, well into hisfinal year.

Mate's Reel. From Rufus Guinchard, from whom many Northwest fiddlers learned it at the Port Townsend Fiddle Tunes Festival in 1989. Several Northwest contra dance bands use this tune.
