MISS GRANT OF MONYMUSK’S JIGG. Scottish, Jig (6/8 time). C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by Kirkmichael, Perthshire, fiddler Biography:Robert Petrie. Sir Archibald Grant (1731-1796), 3rd Baronet of Monymusk, "raised a company of 100 men in 1748, with whom he served for some time in the East India Company's service in St David's, in India". He succeeded to the baronetcy in 1778 upon the death of his father, Sir Archibald Grant 2nd of Monymusk (for whom the famous tune "Monymusk/Moneymusk" is named). Archibald Grant 3rd died at Monymusk in 1796 aged 65. His first wife, whom he married in 1750, was Mary Callander, daughter of Dr. James Callander of Jamaica, from whom the couple inherited estates/plantations on that island. Mary died in 1787, prior to the printing of Petrie's 1790 volume. They had a son, Alexander, and a daughter, Mary (1766-1834), for whom Petrie's tune may have been titled. Mary did not marry until 1796, and thus was still 'Miss Grant'.
