The reel is attributed to fiddler-composer Biography:John French (1752-1803) of Cumnock, Ayrshire. A version of the tune was entered into the 1817 music manuscript collection of Patrick McGahon, of Dungooley, County Louth, on the Armagh border, under the title "Duke of Bedford's Fancy (2) (The)." Donald Grant's "Miss Munro of Dornoch's Reel" is a similar, but not cognate, reel.
