MISS MACLAINE OF TARLOISK'S. Scottish, Strathspey (whole time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Miss MacLaine of Tarloisk's" is contained in a small four-page collection by an unknown composer or editor, that is simply entitled: "Edinr. Printed & Sold by Stewart & Co. Music Sellers South Bridge Street." However the Catalog of the Wighton Collection gives that it was printed for Alexander Campbell, editor of Albyn's Anthology (1815), and likely composed by him. The Macleans of Torloisk are a senior branch of Clan Maclean, with a seat at Tarliosk, Mull, held from the 1500's when the first MacLean of Torloisk ("Allan Nan Sop"), a pirate with a fleet of seven ships, cleaved his wicked stepfathers head in two on the Black Beach. Campbell wrote in 1815 "The Voice of Harps, may yet be heard in the Highlands and Western Islands. As a proof, it is well known that the accomplished ladies of Torloisk are admirably skilled in handling the harp". Novelist and historian Sir Walter Scott (1771 - 1832) was known to be a regular visitor to Torloisk and a close family friend and guardian to the Maclean-Clephane family in the 19th century. The last laird was Lachlan MacLean (1720 - 1799), 7th of Tarloisk, who had one daughter[1], Marianne Maclean, who became proprietress of the estate in 1799. Marianne married general Douglas Clephane of Carslogie, Fifeshire, and had three daughters, Margaret, Anna Jane and Wilmina Marianne. Margaret married the 2nd Marquis of Northampton, and the estate passes into the Northampton family.
