MISS MENZIES OF MENZIES [1]. Scottish, Reel (cut time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The tune was included in the 1824 collection of Perthshire violinist and composer biography:Duncan McKercher, "The Dunkeld Paganini." It was one of several tunes in his collection named for a member of the Menzies family, an old and powerful family in the region, and although he composed some of the tunes he did not claim this particular reel. See also McKercher's "Mr. R. Menzies' Strathspey," "John Menzies, Esqr. of Chesthill's Strathspey," "Mrs. Menzies of Culdares' Jig," "Miss M. McL. Menzies' Reel," "Lady Menzies of Castle Menzies Reel," and "Lady Menzies of Castle Menzies Strathspey." McKercher dedicated his collection to Mrs. Menzies of Castle Menzies, and thanked her for her patronage. The name Menzies is traditionally pronounced 'MING-iz'; according to Wikipedia, "it is probably derived, like its Gaelic form Méinnearach, from the Norman name Mesnières."
