Hand scutchers.
MONAGHAN SCUTCHERS [2], THE. Irish, Reel (cut time). A Dorian. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. "The Monaghan Scutchers" is contained in the music manuscript collection of curate and fiddler biography:Rev. Luke Donnellan (1878-1952), Oriel region, south Ulster[1]. wikipedia:Scutching is a step in the processing of cotton or the dressing of flax or hemp in preparation for spinning. It removes impurities from the raw material, such as when seeds are removed from cotton, or straw and woody stems from flax. Homespun linen was one of the main industries of County Monaghan and the Oriel region of south Ulster at one time, and the hacklers and scutchers of the linen industry were traveling tradesmen, carriers of traditional lore and song.

  1. Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor came to believe the ms. is not the work of the curate but rather was originally compiled by an unknown but able fiddler over the course of a playing lifetime, probably in the late 19th century. The ms. later came into the possession of Donnellan, who was also a fiddler.
