Annotation:Morrish Donnivan's Reel
MORRISH DONNIVAN'S REEL. AKA and see "Sandy Banks of Rush (The)," "New Scotch Dance," "Races of Granard (The)." English(?), Hornpipe (whole time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The reel is attributed to "W.J." in Alexander's Fifty New Scotch & Irish Reels & Hornpipes (London, c. 1825), the initials, perhaps of the "eminent professor" who is credited on the cover as editor of the volume. The provenance or the tune is unknown--it was printed in London in a volume purported to be fifty 'new' Scotch and Irish tunes. Researcher Lisa Shields finds mention of a Morrish Donnovan who was Captain of a company in Colonel Charles Hennessy’s Regiment of Foot in the Munster Army fighting alongside the Royalists in 1649, although any connection between this person and tune is speculative.
