MR. FRANKS' MINUET. English, Minuet (3/4 time). F Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Mr. Franks' Minuet" was entered into the c. 1694 music manuscript collection of musician Henry Atkinson of Hartburn, though in "hand B" (i.e. it was perhaps entered by another musician). The title may refer to Johann Wolfgang Franck (1644-c. 1710), who was Kappellmeister at the court of the Margrave of Ansbach from 1673-1678. However, In January 1679 he was forced to flee after murdering one of the musicians of the chapel and wounding his wife in a fit of jealousy. He found sanctuary in Hamburg from 1679-1690 becoming musical director of the Tam Gänsemarkt[1], and Kapellmeister at Hamburg Cathedral from 1682 to 1686. In 1690 Franck resided in London where he was firstly a concert promoter in conjunction with Robert King, but then was active only as a composer who produced operas, cantatas, hymns and songs for London concerts (in 1695 he wrote a song for Colley Cibber's Love's Last Shift).
- ↑ Gänsemarkt (Geese Market) is a public square in Hamburg, Germany, located in the Neustadt quarter. The opera building of Oper am Gänsemarkt at the square was used from 1678 to 1738.
