MR. GRAY OF CARSE. AKA and see "Mrs. Gray of Carse," "Lady Grace Douglas's Reel." Scottish, Reel. C Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB (Athole, Lowe): AABB' (Kerr). The tune was published under this title in Dundee musician Charles Duff's c. 1790 collection, though at approximately the same time wikipedia:Nathaniel Gow published the same tune as "Lady Grace Douglas's Reel," which he attributed to his father, Niel Gow. Music historian John Glen, for one, suggests that Nathaniel Gow appropriated Duff's tune without credit.
Mr. Gray of Carse was born Alexander Lowson, son of an Auchtertyre farmer. Lowson inherited the estate of Carse upon the death of Captain Charles Gray, who bought Carse in 1741, and assumed the name and arms of Gray. He held the estate until his death, and, in 1850, his granddaughter, Carsina Gordon Gray of Carse, inherited.
