He became Albert's personal ghillie and friend. After Albert's death in 1861, Brown was brought to court as a companion and personal servant to the grief-stricken Victoria, and became a favorite of the Queen. Despite the difference in their stations, he was her friend and confidant, though sometimes resented by others. Skinner, who attended the household at Balmoral in the capacity of teacher of dancing, undoubtedly knew Brown well.
