"Mrs. Colonel Grant's Reel" was composed by Elgin fiddler-composer biography:Donald Grant, as a companion piece to his "Mrs. Colonel Grant's Strathspey." It was published in his Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, Jigs &c. (1820-21[1]), a volume dedicated to Mrs. Grant of Castle Grant. 'Mrs. Colonel Grant' was Mary Anne Dunn (1774-1840), daughter of John Charles Dunn, a rich merchant in India, who married Francis William Ogilvy-Grant, 6th Earl of Seafield (1778-1853), known as "Colonel Grant" through his Parliamentary career. Mary Anne died the same year Lord Francis was raised to the Earldom, and thus was only briefly "Lady Grant," an honorific that also went to Francis's second wife, Louisa Emma, daughter of Robert George Maunsell, whom he married in 1843.
