The strathspey was composed by biography:William Christie (1778-1849), a dancing master, fiddler-composer and postman from Cuminestown, Aberdeenshire. There was an Ernest Leslie, 23rd Baron of Balquhain, Aberdeenshire, who served in the Austrian army from 1796-1813, being present at most of their engagements during those years, until he was severely wounded at the Battle of Dresden. He married Baroness Fanny Stilfried, the daughter of the Chamberlain to the Emperor of Austria. However, they spent considerable time on the Continent. He returned several times to Aberdeenshire, even living at Fetternear. the primary home of the Balquhain branch of Leslies,from 1831 to 1834, after which the family returned to Frankfort.
