Originally from N:Tullymet, near Pitlochry, Perthshire. He moved to London in the last decade N:of his life. "Mrs. Garden of Troup (3)" was composed by Scottish fiddler-composer biography:Robert Mackintosh (c. 1745-1808) and was printed in his Fourth Book of New Strathspey Reels (London, 1804), a volume dedicated to the Jane, Duchess of Gordon. Of the several "Mrs. Garden of Troup" women this title could refer to, Mackintosh meant to honor Penelope Smythe, who in 1791 married Francis Garden-Campbell, 6th of Troup and Glenlyon (1768-1815). "Mrs. Garden of Troup [3]" was entered in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England.
