Elizabeth Grant of Viewfield
MRS. GRANT OF VIEWFIELD'S REEL. Scottish, Reel (cut time). C Minor. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. "Mrs. Grant of Viewfield's Reel" was published by Elgin fiddler-composer biography:Donald Grant in his Collection of Strathspeys, Reels, Jigs &c. (1820-21), where it is marked "Old." Viewfield House was built by a soldier with the Honourable East India Company, Colonel Ludovic Grant (c. 1750-1830), in 1803 in extensive grounds on the west side of Nairn and is approached through a long avenue of trees. Colonel Grant married Jane Leadbeater, a widow, in 1800 in Thanet, Kent, England, and they had two daughters, Jane Ann (Grant) Dunlop and Catherine Margaret (Grant) Chavasse, both baptized at Nairn.

At the time of Grant's publication Viewfied was the home of James Augustus Grant (1777-1868), Convener of the County of Nairn. Grant had a distinguished career with the East India Company and returned home to Nairn in 1810. He bought Viewfield in 1812 for his upcoming marriage to Elizabeth Mackintosh of Millbank as their family home, and they wed in 1813. They had seven daughters. James served for many years as Provost and Commissioner of Supply and was named Convener of Nairn County in 1847.

"Mrs. Grant of Viewfield" must be either Ludovic's spouse, Jane, or James' spouse Elizabeth. Today's Nairn Museum is housed in their former home, Viewfield.
