Porteous issued one collection, A Collection of Strathspeys, Reels & Jigs, Respectfully Dedicated to Lady Jardine of Applegarth; Arranged for the Piano Forte, Violin & violoncello by James Porteous (Edinburgh, 1821). "Mrs. Hope Johnston's Strathspey" was entered into the music manuscript collections of John Rook (1840, Waverton, Cumbria) and William Irwin (1838, Lake District).
