MUNGO'S DELIGHT. English, Country Dance Tune & Jig (6/8 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. Composed by biography: Ignatius Sancho (1729-1780), born a slave who rose to successful middle-class life under the patronage of the Montagu family, and who published four collections of songs and dances. The title may refer to a character in Isaac Bickerstaff's stage production The Padlock (1769). Sancho had dabbled, apparently unsuccessfully, in the theater as a young man and had the acquaintance of actor and producer David Garrick. While he probably did not play Bickerstaff's character, Sancho kept up with the theater and would have been well-acquainted with the play. He may have been doubly interested given that Mungo was a Black slave in The Padlock.
