John Glen (1891) finds the earliest appearance of the tune in print in biography:Angus Cumming's 1780 collection (p. 15). Although he also found the "earliest appearance" of the melody in biography:Alexander McGlashan's collection (under the title "Larickille") of about the same year. biography:Robert Petrie printed the strathspey as "Peep a Day/Peep o' Day (2)" in his Third Collection (c. 1800). The strathspey was, however, composed by Angus Cumming (1780), according to Alfred Moffat. The tune was also entered into the c. 1780-c. 1804 music manuscript collection of musician John Buttery, a fife player with the British Army who saw service at the end of the 18th and beginning of the 19th centuries, and who amassed a large mss. The first strain of "Miss Ross's Reel (2)" and "Perth Hunt (2) (The)" are shared with this tune family, although the second strains diverge. Michael Newton, writing in his blog "The Origins of the Strathspey: A Rebuttal" [1] believes the correct Scots Gaelic title of Cumming's "Mal ro" should be "Maol Ruadh."
