The tune, a member of the large and varied "Tie the Ribbons (1)" tune family, was entered as an untitled reel (see "Reel (84)") into Book 2 of the large c. 1883 music manuscript collection of County Leitrim fiddler and piper biography:Stephen Grier (c. 1824-1894). Irish flute player John McKenna recorded the tune in the 78 RPM era under the title "Maids of Galway." See also the generally similar "Dowd's Favorite (1)."
