The tune with directions for a country dance was first printed in Henry Playford's Dancing Master 9th edition (1695) as "The New Bore," with the alternate title "Indian Queen (1)." The piece was retained in the long-running Dancing Master series through the 18th and final edition of 1728, printed at the time by John Young, heir to the Playford publishing concerns. After the 13th edition of the Dancing Master the main title became "Indian Queen (1)."
Boston music publisher Elias Howe printed the tune with the title "The New Bow," a corruption of "New Bore."
