NEW DANIEL COOPER. AKA - "New Donnal Cooper," "Dan Cooper," "Daniel Couper." AKA and see "Will with a Wisp." English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). D Major ('A' part) & G Major ('B' part). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The melody first appears in print in David Rutherford's Choice Collection of Sixty of the Most Celebrated Country Dances (London, 1750), reprinted a decade later in his Compleat Collection of 200 Country Dances, vol. 2 (London, 1760). It was also published by John Johnson in Choice Collection of 200 Favourite Country Dances, vol. 6 (London, 1751) and in Charles and Samuel Thompson's 1757 country dance collection. The melody was picked up by musicians and entered into manuscript copybooks on both sides of the Atlantic. As "Daniel Couper" it appears in the [James] Gillespie Manuscript of Perth (1768). London fiddler Walter Rainstorp included it in his manuscript book, begun in 1747, and Northumbrian musician William Vickers entered it into his 1770 manuscript collection ("New Donnal Cooper," p. 7 [1]). In America, it appears in the 1794 manuscript papers of flute player Micah Hawkins (New York), and in flute player John Hoff's 1797 copybook (Lancaster, Pa.).
