OLD JOHN'S JIG (Port Shean tSeáin). AKA – "Joe's Jig," "Old Joe's Jig." AKA and see "Bank of Ireland (2)," "Port Shean tSeáin." Irish, Double Jig. A Dorian (Breathnach, Cranitch): E Dorian (Miller). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. The tune was named by Brendan Breathnach (in CRÉ 1) in honor of source Seán Potts' grandfather, piper and flute player John Potts (a native of Kiltra, County Wexford). O'Sullivan (1983) remarks that this tune is a jig variant of harper Turlough O'Carolan's "Princess Royal (1)." Breathnach (1963) notes that O'Neill's "Short Grass (The)" has several bars reminiscent of this jig, as does a jig printed by R.M. Levey (No. 87). See also the related "Rambler from Clare (1) (The)" and the reels "Bank of Ireland" and "Kerryman's Daughter (1) (The)."
