OLD WILLIE HUNTER. AKA - "Auld Willie Hunter." Shetlands, March or Reel (4/4 time). A Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB'. Composed by Shetland musician and composer Ronald Cooper [1] (1934-1982). The march was picked up by Scottish dance bands and popularized with fiddlers in Britain. Willie Hunter Jr. (1933–1994) was a Shetland fiddler and composer whose most famous compositions were the slow air "Leaving Lerwick Harbour," the reel "Cape Breton Visit to Shetland (The)," and the strathspey "Willie Hunter's Compliments to Dan R. MacDonald."
Ronnie Cooper
. Along with Cooper, Hunter was a member of the dance band The Hamefarers. Willie's father was also Willie Hunter, a blacksmith and an excellent fiddler, and it would seem the title refers to the older man (since Cooper and Willie Hunter Jr. were contemporaries).
