ONE CHOPPIN MAIR. Scottish, Reel. D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. The reel was composed by Ayrshire fiddler-composer biography:John French. The tune appears in his A Collection of New Strathspey Reels (1801), dedicated to "Mrs. Boswell of Auchinlich" (for whom see "annotation:Mrs. Boswell of Auchinleck’s Reel"). Choppin is Scots for a half-pint, so the title can be read "One Half-pint More." Charles Gore suggests that some of the titles of French's tunes, such as this one and "Sent us Whisky" may relate to some dissolution on the part of the composer, whose family was possibly left in dire straits, as the composer's collection was posthumously issued "for behoof of Mr. French's widow and children."
