OTAHEITE JIG. American, Jig (6/8 time). G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AAB. Otaheite is the former name for the island of Wikipedia:Tahiti, a part of French Polynesia, a semi-autonomous territory of France. Otaheite/Tahiti was topical at the time of Elias Howe's publication of Musician's Omnibus Nos. 6 & 7 (1880-1882), for, in June, 1880, the new Taihitian king, Pōmare V, at the urging of the French governor Henri Isidore Chessé, supported by the Tahitian chiefs, pressured him to abdicate in favor of France. Pōmare V seemed to have little interest in governing but accepted a sinecure as Officer of the Orders of the Legion of Honor and Agricultural Merit of France. The inhabitants of Tahiti lost sovereignty, but gained French citizenship. A decade later the painter Paul Gauguin came to the island to live and paint.
