OUT AND IN UPON OCCASION. English, Jig. England, Northumberland. G Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Out and In Upon Occasion" was first published in R. Hinton's periodical The Universal Magazine of Knowledge and Pleasure (London, 1759, described as "A new Country Dance"). The melody also appears in the 1770 music manuscript copybook of Northumbrian musician William Vickers, about whom little is known, and in the mid-19th century music manuscript collection of Manchester, England, musician biography:John Roose. In America, it was included by Lancaster County, Pa., flute player John Hoff (1776-1818) in his music copybook.
