In a 1906 letter to Alfred Percival Graves in 1906 (printed in "A Few Gossipy Notes" in the Journal of the Irish Folk Song Society, London, O'Neill revealed some of the sources for his tunes:
Happening into a Chicago theatre one evening, a pianist was pounding No. 761 ("Out with the Boys") for a stage dancer. The tune was mine before I left.
It is a variant of the jig "Irish Whiskey (1)," printed by Glasgow publisher James S. Kerr in the 1880's.
