This version of "Paddy on the Turnpike" is from the repertoire of Macon County, north-central Tennessee (upper Cumberland Plateau) fiddler biography:Sam Dyer, who was said to have been in his mid-70's when he was recorded in the field by collector Bruce Greene in 1972. However, Dyer's obituary gives his birth date as 1906, making him closer to age 66 at the time he played for Greene. Dyer's "Paddy" has none of the modal characteristics or melodic material in the first strain of the older "Paddy on the Turnpike (1)," and only becomes recognizable as a member of the tune family by its characteristic shift to 'double tonic' (mixolydian mode) in the second strain.
