John Glen (1891) finds the earliest printing of this tune in Robert Bremner's 1757 collection, however, it appears earlier in London publisher John Walsh's Country Dances Selected, Part 1 (1748), printed with country dance directions. London publisher David Rutherford also printed the tune around 1760. The Gows later re-titled the reel as "Parks of Fochabers" in Complete Repository Part 3 (1806).
The village of Kilbirnie is in North Ayrshire, and was, in the early 19th century, was known for its flax and weaving trade. Only eight years prior to the first printing of the reel (London, 1748), there were only three houses at Kilbirnie, and population grew to 959 people by 1801.
