PEEP AT THE JUBILEE, A. English, Country Dance Tune (2/4 time). B Flat Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB.The tune title, along with the county dance preceding this in Longman's volume, "Trip to Stratford Upon Avon (A)", refers to the Shakespeare Jubilee held at Stratford on Avon in September, 1769, the first such commemoration of Shakespeare. Held five years after the bicentenary of his birth, it was the inspiration of England's premier actor and theatrical producer, David Garrick, and helped cement Shakespeare as England's national poet. The jubilee was an outstanding success despite bad weather that postponed the grand pageant, and curiously no plays of Shakespeare were performed during it. It drew large crowds and a representation from Englands cultural, economic and political arenas. Thomas Arne composed the song "Soft Flowing Avon" for the Jubilee.
