PENNYWORTH OF STRAW, THE. Irish, Reel (cut time). D Major. Standard tuning (fiddle). AB. Donnellan researcher Gerry O'Connor reconstructed the tune in his publication The Rose in the Gap, noting that Donnellan's original was a faulty transcription. He also changed the key to 'D' Mixolydian from Donnellan's original 'D' dorian (i.e. no accidentals in key signature). O'Connor also finds correspondence in the Scottish puert-à-beal (mouth music) melody entitled " 'Na robh agam giobal bodaich bhogainn"
Nam biodh agam gioball bodaich
Bhogainn as an allt e
Nam biodh agam gioball bodaich
Bhogainn as an allt e
Nam biodh agam gioball bodaich
Bhogainn as an allt e
'S mur biodh e ghlan nuair a bheirinn 's e

If I had a ragged old man
I'd soak him in the stream
If I had a ragged old man
I'd soak him in the stream
If I had a ragged old man
I'd soak him in the stream
And if he weren't clean when I removed him
I'd soak him again
Researcher Conor Ward finds Donnellan's tune to be a version of "Clean Peas Straw/Clean Pease Strae."
