PEVENSEY CASTLE. English, Hornpipe (whole time). D Major (Winter): G Major ('Young Lady'). Standard tuning (fiddle). AABB. "Pevensey Castle" can be found in an anonymous collection by "A Young Lady" entitled “A Collection of Country Dances and Waltzes” (c. 1797, No. 4, p. 6). According to a Ms. note on the Royal Academy of Music Library copy, the composer is Miss Newberry. The hornpipe was also entered in the mid-19th century music manuscript of William Winter[1] (1774-1861), a shoemaker and violin player who lived in West Bagborough in Somerset, southwest England.
